Abstract

In the present work we aim to analyze the provincialization of Tierra del Fuego, in a broader framework that involves what was the State construction process in Patagonia. This statalization, which began in the late nineteenth century, has its climax with the liquidation of the so-called "National Territories" towards the middle of the 20th century, except for Tierra del Fuego, which will be provincialized only in 1991.
The mismatch does nothing more than highlight the original place of this province in the historical evolution of Patagonia. This situation has its origins in its insular condition and the differentiated modalities that both its occupation and the policies of settlement and economic development had.
These facts have been treated in a predominantly narrative and descriptive literature; in the present text we seek to expand the comprehensive and explanatory frontier in line with achieving a more complete knowledge of the history and socio-political present of Tierra del Fuego.
