Marcelo Diamand mentions that one of the reasons that justifies the inclusion of the teaching of economics lies in "... assisting in the exercise of the rights and obligations of each person as a citizen, which includes everything from voting to participation in political processes and opinion, and requires a certain minimum capacity for analyzing political offers, the content, and meaning of political discourse (...) it is crucial that citizens know the analytical and ideological foundations of different economic policies and the effects of the measures that implement them". (Diamand, 1996)
It is in this sense that in this article we intend to contribute to the critical analysis of the external restriction, as well as its implications on the socioeconomic destinies of the country. To this end, we explore the impact that the agro-export model and the ISI may have had on the development of the external constraint, which we understand will be decisive, also taking into account the configuration and treatment of the so-called "unbalanced productive structures".
