This article continues previous research aimed at measuring the disparities between the production of productive knowledge generated with public funds and its appropriation by private or foreign actors within the framework of social relationships referred to as 'cognitive appropriation.' The results of an investigation into the causes and motivations that lead to these types of relationships are presented from the perspective of researchers who are also inventors in patent applications. The main result consists of a typology of causes and motivations grouped into four categories: 1) deficiencies in training, 2) institutional constraints, 3) attraction of actors favorable to cognitive appropriation, and 4) personal desire.
