Abstract

he United Nations (UN) Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm (Sweden) in 1972, was a pivotal moment in the global recognition of environmental issues. On the other hand, starting with the 1987 report titled 'Our Common Future' and the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, with the implementation of the concept of sustainable development, the idea of sustainability began to be employed with various interpretations. A style of sustainable development should take into account all the pillars of sustainability adapted to our societies, necessary to achieve a higher quality of life for our population and the protection of natural resources, with social inclusion and equitable wealth distribution. Sustainable development, in its broadest conception, should act as a protective umbrella for the tools of environmental assessment and strategic planning by the State.
