Abstract

Recent socioeconomic history of two localities of Santa Fe is presented in this article in order to analyse the impact of agrarian transformations on the labour world between 1990-2010. The methodology combined quantitative and qualitative techniques: data from population censuses, information from local and regional newspapers and interviews with qualified informants. Since agrarian modernisation, the fall in rural labour and the predominance of labour in trade and service areas have been verified. This was a common process for the entire area, but the geographical location and prior economic conditions marked differences. In the port-city, the economically active population increased with a larger influence of industrial work. In the service-city, the contraction of agrarian work was not compensated by other activity. The contracted labour market favoured the conditions of precarious labour relationships
