Abstract

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the perspective of the written press regarding the deregulation of the yerba mate industry in Argentina. For this analysis, the two highest-circulation morning newspapers in the province of Misiones—El Territorio and Primera Edición—are considered. The premise is to recognize the construction of discourse and interpret the ideological framework of these newspapers regarding one of the country's so-called regional economies. The focus is centered on the arguments referring to the suppression and elimination of the Yerba Mate Regulatory Commission (CRYM) that occurred in 1991. Furthermore, the objective is to observe the stance taken regarding this event and to identify—where possible—which sectors of the yerba mate economy are privileged in their articles, editorials, or segments dedicated to this subject.
